The Show Must Go On_Busan
오케이앤피 부산은 2026년 6월 30일(화)부터 8월 2일(일)까지 《The Show Must Go On_Busan》을 개최한다. 동시대 작가 15명이 참여하는 이번 전시는 회화, 조각, 영상, 설치미술을 전시하는 일반적인 방식과 달리, 작가들이 직접 제작한 ‘가방’을 통해 작품세계를 소개하는 새로운 형식의 전시이다.
《The Show Must Go On》은 전시이기 이전에, 작가들의 작품을 ‘가방’이라는 이동 가능한 매체를 통해 소개하고자 시작된 프로젝트였다. 작가들은 작품을 만들 듯 자신의 포트폴리오 가방을 제작했고, 이 가방들은 런던(영국), 베니스(이탈리아), 파리(프랑스), LA(미국) 등 세계 곳곳으로 10여 년간 이동해왔다. 팬데믹 시기에도 이 이동은 멈추지 않았다. 오히려 가방이라는 유연한 형식은 제한된 조건 속에서 더 큰 가능성을 드러냈고, 다양한 장소에서 관람객과 미술관계자들을 만나며 의미 있는 성과를 쌓아왔다. 해를 거듭할수록 참여 작가는 늘어났고, 최근에는 이 프로젝트를 한데 모아 전시의 형태로 선보이길 바라는 주변의 바람 속에서 오타와(캐나다) 등 해외는 물론 양양, 거제 등 국내 여러 지역을 순회하고 있다. 그렇게 “쇼는 계속되어야 한다”는 제목은 단순한 프로젝트를 넘어 하나의 전시 방법론으로 자리 잡았다.
전시로서의 《The Show Must Go On》은 스펙터클한 대형 국제전이 점점 늘어나는 오늘날, 작가와 관객, 기획자가 충분히 만나고 대화할 수 있는 기회는 얼마나 되는가를 질문한다. 비록 작은 가방이지만, 그 안에는 한 작가의 작품세계가 압축되어 있다. 그러므로 가방 하나하나는 작가의 작은 개인전이며, 그것들이 한자리에 모인 이번 전시는 규모로는 비교할 수 없지만 내용적으로는 하나의 미술관과 같은 경험을 제공한다.
이번 부산 전시는 그간의 여정을 기록하는 중간 지점이자, 다음 이동을 위한 새로운 출발점이다. 아카이브와 참여 작가들의 작업을 통해 프로젝트가 어떻게 이동하고 공유되어 왔는지를 보여주며, 관객은 가방 속 작품과 자료를 가까이에서 경험할 수 있다. 특히 전시 공간인 오케이앤피 부산은 해운대의 풍경과 여행자들의 활기가 교차하는 장소이다. 머묾과 이동이 공존하는 부산이라는 도시의 성격은 ‘이동하는 전시’라는 프로젝트의 방향과 자연스럽게 맞닿아 있다. 부산을 찾은 관객은 여행의 동선 속에서 현대미술을 우연히 만나고, 아직 경험하지 못한 작가와 작품의 세계를 발견하게 된다.
《The Show Must Go On_Busan》은 단순히 작품을 여러 공간에 펼쳐 보이는 전시가 아니다. 이 전시는 작품이 어디에서, 어떤 방식으로, 누구와 함께 지속될 수 있는지를 묻는다. 부산에서 다시 펼쳐지는 이번 여정이 또 하나의 공간, 또 하나의 관객과 새로운 접점을 만들고, 다음 이동을 위한 또 다른 만남의 계기가 되기를 기대한다.
OKNP Busan presents 《The Show Must Go On_Busan》 from June 30 (Tue) to August 2 (Sun), 2026. Featuring 15 contemporary artists, the exhibition introduces a new exhibition format in which each artist presents their artistic practice through a self-designed “bag,” rather than through the conventional display of paintings, sculptures, video works, or installations.
《The Show Must Go On》began not as an exhibition, but as a project to introduce artists’ practices through portable bags. Each participating artist created a portfolio bag as though producing a work of art in itself. Over the past decade, these bags have traveled across the world—to London (UK), Venice (Italy), Paris (France), Los Angeles (USA), and many other destinations. Even during the pandemic, this journey never came to a halt. On the contrary, the flexible format of the bag revealed even greater potential under restricted circumstances, enabling meaningful encounters with audiences and art professionals in diverse locations. As the years passed, the number of participating artists steadily increased. More recently, encouraged by those who wished to see the project presented collectively, The Show Must Go On has evolved into an exhibition that has toured internationally—including Ottawa (Canada)—as well as various cities across Korea, such as Yangyang and Geoje. In this way, the title The Show Must Go On has grown beyond the name of a project to represent an evolving exhibition methodology.
As an exhibition, 《The Show Must Go On》 raises an important question in an era increasingly dominated by spectacular large-scale international exhibitions: how many genuine opportunities remain for artists, audiences, and curators to meet, engage, and exchange ideas? Although each bag is modest in size, it encapsulates the essence of an individual artist’s practice. Every bag therefore functions as a miniature solo exhibition, and together these individual presentations create an experience that, while incomparable in scale, offers the richness and depth of a museum.
The Busan presentation marks both a milestone in the project’s ongoing journey and a new point of departure for its future travels. Through archival materials and the participating artists’ works, the exhibition traces how the project has moved, evolved, and been shared across different places, while inviting visitors to closely experience the artworks and documents contained within each bag. OKNP Busan, located in Haeundae where the city’s vibrant seaside landscape intersects with the energy of travelers, provides an especially fitting venue for this exhibition. The coexistence of movement and temporary stay that characterizes Busan naturally resonates with the project’s concept of a traveling exhibition. Visitors to Busan may unexpectedly encounter contemporary art along the course of their travels and discover artists and practices they have never experienced before.
《The Show Must Go On_Busan》 is not simply an exhibition that disperses artworks across a gallery space. Rather, it asks where, how, and with whom artworks can continue to exist and evolve. It is hoped that this latest chapter in Busan will create new points of connection with another place, another audience, and another journey, serving as the beginning of the project’s next destination.
