PALIMPSEST, 겹쳐진 시간의 층

하태임은 지난 20 여 년간 ‘컬러 밴드(color band)’라는 고유한 회화 언어를 통해 독자적인 추상 세계를 구축 해온 작가이다. 화면을 가로지르는 색띠들은 단순한 색면 구성이 아니라, 반복적인 붓질과 기다림의 시간 속 에서 축적된 흔적이자 신체적 행위의 기록이다. 즉흥적으로 보이는 화면은 오랜 수행적 과정의 결과이며, 물 리적 시간과 몸의 리듬이 응축된 시각적 층위를 형성한다.
하태임의 작업은 이전의 흔적 위에 덧입혀지고 지워지기를 반복하는 과정 속에서 이루어진다. 그러나 지워진 흔적들은 완전히 사라지지 않고 화면 어딘가에 잔존하며, 색의 겹침 속에서 새로운 공간감을 만들어낸다. 이 러한 구조에 대해 홍익대학교 정연심 교수는 고대 필사본의 기록 방식에서 유래한 ‘팔림프세스트(palimpsest)’ 개념을 통해 설명한다. 팔림프세스트가 이전의 흔적을 지우고 그 위에 다시 쓰면서도 과거의 흔적을 완전히 제거하지 못하는 구조이듯, 하태임의 회화 역시 지움과 생성이 공존하는 다층적 시간의 공간으로 읽힌다는 것이다.
이 중첩의 회화는 작가의 삶과도 긴밀하게 연결된다. 프랑스와 한국을 오가며 축적된 경험과 기억, 관계의 변화는 색의 층위로 화면에 스며든다. 서로 겹치고 어긋나며 공존하는 색띠들은 삶의 관계망처럼 교차하며 고 유한 리듬을 만들어낸다.
하태임에게 색은 단순한 시각적 요소가 아니라 감정의 흔적이자 존재의 기록이다. 관람자는 색의 깊이와 투 명성이 만들어내는 미묘한 울림 속에서 사라지지 않는 시간의 흔적과 마주하게 된다. 이번 전시는 하태임의 컬러 밴드가 형성하는 층위의 깊이를 통해 색으로 축적된 시간과 기억의 구조를 조망하고자 한다.
Ha TaeIm is an artist who has established a distinctive abstract world over the past two decades through her unique painterly language of the “color band.” The bands of color that traverse the canvas are not merely formal arrangements of chromatic planes, but accumulated traces of repetitive brushwork, intervals of waiting, and records of bodily gesture. What may appear spontaneous is, in fact, the result of a prolonged and performative process, forming visual strata in which physical time and the rhythm of the body are condensed.
Ha TaeIm’s practice unfolds through a continual process of layering over and erasing previous traces. Yet these erased marks do not disappear completely; they remain embedded somewhere within the surface, generating a renewed sense of spatial depth through the overlapping of colors. Professor Yeon Shim Chung of Hongik University has described this structure through the concept of the “palimpsest,” a term derived from the recording practices of ancient manuscripts. Just as a palimpsest involves writing anew over erased text while never fully eliminating the traces of what came before, Ha TaeIm’s paintings may likewise be understood as multilayered spaces in which erasure and creation coexist, and where different temporalities remain inscribed.
This layered mode of painting is also closely bound to the artist’s life. The experiences, memories, and changing relationships accumulated through her movement between France and Korea permeate the canvas as strata of color. Overlapping, shifting, and coexisting, the color bands intersect like the network of human relationships, forming a rhythm uniquely their own.
For Ha TaeIm, color is not merely a visual element, but a trace of emotion and a record of being. Within the subtle resonance produced by the depth and translucency of color, the viewer encounters the enduring traces of time that do not vanish. Through the depth of the layers formed by Ha TaeIm’s color bands, this exhibition seeks to illuminate the structure of time and memory as accumulated in color.
